If you earn tips yourself, the guide below explains the 2026 federal deduction for qualified tips.

What is a Tip Calculator?

Tipping is customary in the US for many services, especially restaurant table service, where 15–20% is common, and many people tip around 18–20% today. A tip calculator saves the mental math, lets you tip on the pre-tax amount, and splits the bill fairly among a group.

For workers, tips are taxable income. From 2025 through 2028, the One Big Beautiful Bill Act lets eligible workers in tipped occupations deduct up to $25,000 of qualified tips from federal income tax, phasing out at higher incomes. Tips are still subject to Social Security and Medicare tax.

How does the Tip Calculator work?

If you enter the sales tax, the calculator subtracts it to get the pre-tax amount and applies the tip percentage to that. It adds the tip to the bill and divides by the number of people.

With rounding on, each share is rounded up to the next dollar and the extra is added to the tip.

Tip = (Bill − Tax) × Tip %Total = Bill + Tip. Each person = Total ÷ People (rounded up if you choose).

How to use the Tip Calculator step by step

  1. Enter the bill total.
  2. Optionally enter the sales tax to tip on the pre-tax amount.
  3. Choose the tip percentage.
  4. Enter the number of people.
  5. Choose whether to round each share up.
  6. Read the tip, total and each person’s share.

Tip Calculator FAQs

15–20% of the pre-tax bill is standard for table service in the US; many people now tip around 18–20%.

Add the tip to the bill and divide by the number of people. The calculator does this and can round up.

Are tips tax-free in 2026?

$20, for a total of $120.

It’s optional. Many people leave 10% or a few dollars for larger orders.
