What is a Future Value Calculator?

Future value (FV) is what an amount of money will grow to after a period of time at a given rate of return. It combines the growth of a lump sum with the growth of regular deposits, both helped by compounding: earning returns on earlier returns.

Future value helps you set savings goals, compare accounts and see the effect of starting early or adding a little more each month. This future value calculator handles a starting amount, regular deposits, compounding frequency, deposit timing and yearly step-ups.

How does the Future Value Calculator work?

The calculator converts the annual rate into a rate per deposit period based on your compounding choice, then runs the balance period by period: it grows the balance and adds each deposit at the start or end of the period. Each year, deposits rise by the step-up percentage.

Running the numbers period by period, rather than with a single formula, lets the tool handle step-ups and mixed deposit and compounding frequencies correctly. The yearly table shows how much of your balance comes from your own money and how much from interest, which is where the power of compounding becomes visible after the first decade.

FV = PV × (1 + i)^n + PMT × ((1 + i)^n − 1) ÷ i (× (1 + i) for deposits at the beginning)i = (1 + r ÷ k)^(k ÷ deposits per year) − 1
