What is a FIRE Calculator?

FIRE stands for Financial Independence, Retire Early. The idea is to save and invest aggressively until your investments are large enough that a small yearly withdrawal can cover your living costs indefinitely. At that point, work becomes optional.

Your FIRE number is your yearly expenses divided by a safe withdrawal rate. The famous 4% rule comes from US studies; because Indian inflation is higher, many planners suggest 3–3.5% for India. A FIRE calculator works out your number and how long it will take to reach it.

How does the FIRE Calculator work?

The calculator divides your yearly expenses by the withdrawal rate to get your FIRE number in today’s money. It then grows your investments each month at the expected return, adds your monthly investment, and raises the target with inflation until your investments catch up.

Coast FIRE is the amount that, invested today with no more contributions, would grow to your inflation-adjusted FIRE number by age 60.

FIRE number = Yearly expenses ÷ Safe withdrawal rateAt 3.5%, that is about 28.6 times your yearly expenses. Coast FIRE = FIRE number × (1 + inflation)years ÷ (1 + return)years.

How to use the FIRE Calculator step by step

  1. Enter your current age.
  2. Enter your yearly expenses today.
  3. Enter your current investments and monthly investment.
  4. Set the expected return, inflation and withdrawal rate.
  5. Read your FIRE number and the time to reach it.
  6. Compare Lean, Fat and Coast FIRE targets.

FIRE Calculator FAQs

What is the FIRE number?

It is the amount you need invested so that a safe yearly withdrawal covers your expenses: yearly expenses ÷ withdrawal rate.

Does the 4% rule work in India?

Many Indian planners prefer 3–3.5% because inflation has historically been higher than in the US. A lower rate means a larger, safer target.

What is Coast FIRE?

Coast FIRE means you have enough invested that, even without adding more, it will grow to your FIRE number by your chosen retirement age.

Lean FIRE vs Fat FIRE: what's the difference?

Lean FIRE targets a frugal lifestyle with lower expenses; Fat FIRE targets a more comfortable one with higher expenses and a bigger corpus.

How much do I need to retire early in India?

At a 3.5% withdrawal rate, about 28–29 times your yearly expenses. For ₹9 lakh a year, that is roughly ₹2.6 crore in today’s money.

How can I reach FIRE faster?

Increase your savings rate, keep costs low, invest consistently and avoid lifestyle inflation as your income grows.
