What is a PPF Calculator?
The Public Provident Fund (PPF) is a long-term savings scheme backed by the Government of India. You can open one account at a post office or bank, deposit between ₹500 and ₹1,50,000 each financial year, and the account matures after 15 full financial years. After that you can extend it in blocks of 5 years, with or without fresh deposits.
PPF is popular because it combines safety, a reasonable fixed rate and tax benefits. Interest and the maturity amount are tax-free, and under the old tax regime your deposits qualify for a deduction. A PPF calculator shows how much the account will grow so you can plan your yearly deposits.
How does the PPF Calculator work?
PPF interest is worked out every month on the lowest balance between the 5th and the last day of the month, and credited once a year on 31 March. That is why deposits made by 5 April earn interest for the whole year.
The calculator models this with yearly compounding. If you deposit by 5 April, each deposit earns a full year’s interest; if you deposit near the end of the year, it earns almost nothing until the next year.
How to use the PPF Calculator step by step
- Enter your yearly deposit, between ₹500 and ₹1,50,000.
- Check the PPF rate; it is pre-filled with the current rate.
- Choose the term: 15 years or an extension.
- Choose when you deposit each year.
- Read the maturity value, deposits and interest.
- Scroll the yearly table or download it.
PPF Calculator example with real numbers
You deposit the maximum ₹1,50,000 into your PPF account before 5 April every year for 15 years, at the current 7.1% rate.
| Example input | Value |
|---|---|
| Yearly deposit | ₹1,50,000 |
| PPF interest rate | 7.1% |
| Term | 15 years (original term) |
| When you deposit each year | By 5 April |
| Example output | Value |
|---|---|
| Maturity value after 15 years | ₹40,68,209 |
| Total deposits | ₹22,50,000 |
| Total interest (tax-free) | ₹18,18,209 |
| Deduction under old regime | Up to ₹1,50,000 a year (familiar as Section 80C) |
The PPF calculator shows a maturity value of ₹40,68,209. You deposit ₹22,50,000 and earn ₹18,18,209 as interest, all of it tax-free. Extending by two more 5-year blocks with deposits would grow the account much further.

Tips for better results
- Deposit before 5 April each year to earn interest for the whole year.
- If you deposit monthly, pay before the 5th of each month.
- Extend with deposits if you do not need the money; the tax-free status continues.
- Keep at least ₹500 a year going to avoid the account becoming inactive.
Common mistakes to avoid
- Depositing after the 5th and losing a month’s interest.
- Depositing more than ₹1,50,000 in a year; the extra earns nothing.
- Letting the account lapse by missing the minimum yearly deposit.
- Forgetting to submit the extension form within a year of maturity.
Limitations of this PPF Calculator
- It assumes the current rate stays the same for the whole term.
- It uses yearly compounding, matching how interest is credited.
- It does not model partial withdrawals or loans against PPF.
